In 2025, an average of 18,057 families and more than 31,200 children stayed in NYC Department of Homeless Services shelters each night.

Yet family homelessness often goes unseen. While street homelessness is more visible, families experiencing homelessness may be staying in shelters or living in overcrowded, inadequate housing.

Our new edition of the fact sheet, Family Homelessness 101: New York City, takes a closer look at the scale of the crisis, its causes, and its impact on families and children.
