For families experiencing homelessness, shelter isn’t just a roof over their head— it’s a lifeline.

For years, many NYC families were placed in shelters run by private landlords, an approach that can be costly for the city and often provides fewer services for residents. Now, city agencies are increasingly prioritizing nonprofit-run shelters designed with families in mind. These sites offer private living spaces, children`s recreation areas, expanded laundry facilities and, at one new Flushing location, even accommodations for pets.

Advocates and officials say these changes can help reduce the stigma of homelessness and provide families with a more stable, supportive environment as they work toward permanent housing.
