New York City`s right-to-shelter system means that family homelessness is often less visible than other forms of homelessness.

Families with children are less likely to remain unsheltered in public spaces—but reduced visibility does not mean reduced need.

Our analysis suggests that this relative invisibility may influence how often family homelessness is covered in the news.

Thousands of families continue to navigate housing instability, educational disruption, childcare challenges, and employment pressures while living in shelter each night.
